Brockman Community House Family Support
The focus of Brockman House Inc. is upon families in this area. We offer a number of supportive ways in which families can empower and enrich their lives.
Family Support is offered in a variety of ways. Brockman House Inc. is uniquely situated to offer you and your family links to places that can better suit your specific needs. These places are often hard to find or intimidating to approach without first having someone assist or refer you, such as our skilled and friendly staff. This unique networking can come in the form of linking you to financial counseling, relationship counseling, parenting support and special courses for families who find themselves in difficult situations
We also link with trained facilitators in parenting support. Social factors also come into consideration when parenting, as it can become difficult for parents to get out of the house and socialise to avoid isolation. We offer a number of craft and cooking courses which are a great way to learn something new and find new friends in the area.
Pre employment course are offered on a demand basis. These are a great way to come to a small and friendly Centre to discover your talents before going out into the workforce.
Feel free to come and have a chat with our friendly staff and find out how we can work together to enrich our lives. The number for Reception is 08 9279-1588, or drop in and meet us at 27 Hull Way Beechboro, just behind Altone Shopping Centre.
Brockman House Inc. Playgroups
Do you have a child under 5 years? Would you like to meet and socialise with other families in your area? Brockman House Inc. hosts a number of playgroups during the week catering for all aged groups. Our playgroups are hosted by our Playgroup Leader Jo who is skilled in creating a fun and friendly atmosphere for your child to play in while you relax with other mums and dads.
At Playgroup you will find friendly families, lots of children playing, song time, mat time, morning tea, and a thoroughly enjoyable experience for you and your child/ren. Your child/ren will have he opportunity to socialise in a fun environment with other children and learn to be big and brave around different people. You will have the opportunity to have 'grown up' talk with other mums & dads in this community, commiserate parenting horrors, and celebrate parenting strengths. Our sessions are smaller than corporate owned Playgroups, so you wont get lost in the crowd, but large enough for you to enjoy the freedom of being out and about with other families.
Brockman House Inc. Creche
Making learning and social activities accessible for parents
We have some wonderful courses and social activities on offer at Brockman House, but it can be difficult for parents to access these when they have young children. That is why creche is offered to all parents using the Centre for our courses. Brockman House believes all parents and families have the right to be able to access services which can improve their social outlook and learning opportunities.
Creche facilities
Our Creche workers have National & Working With Children checks as well as Senior First Aid Certification. We have our own special creche room with a variety of toys and games including creative art play such as painting. We also have a large fenced playground and sandpit for creche children to play in, an undercover outdoor play area for inclement weather, and a host of outdoor toys.
Creche Guidelines
If you will be utilising our creche services whilst you're at one of our courses, their are some rules that you must abide by -
• Parents must remain on the premises when their child is in creche. If you do not do so, you will be in contravention of State Creche Regulations and you may not be able to utilise our creche services again.
• Parents must also bring nappies, comforters, food and a SunSafe hat with their child.
• Creche fees apply. Parents must pay these prior to using the service.
A copy of our booklet - Guidelines for parents using creche, is available on our Downloads page.
Fees
Fees are payable each time you use creche. Fees information is available at Reception
Let us know...
If you need creche, let Reception know when you're booking the course prior to coming to the course so we can arrange creche workers. You also need to let Reception know if you're not coming, so we can inform our creche staff prior to them arriving.
ADULT COMMUNITY EDUCATION
Adults learn differently
Because of Adults life experiences, they generally approach education in a different than children do. Adults have their own ideas about what's important to them, have life experiences which to which they can relate new learning, and tend to learn when they must fulfil a need. These needs vary but in a quickly evolving society, especially with technologies, and with the demands of the new "Welfare to Work" system, adults need a safe welcoming place in which they can learn new skills or brush up on their abilities.
Adult education at a community level means that education occurs in the community, and is collectively owned and run by the community. At Brockman House, it means that our classes are small, friendly and comfortable - something that is hard to find if you were to attend TAFE or university.
Learning is a big step
Adults learn differently than children. For a woman returning to the workforce after managing a family for sometime, simply coming to a social class can be a huge step, but one that will provide her with opportunities to meet new people, learn socialising skills and see what's happening and current in her community. Thus even classes that have an emphasis on socialising are extremely helpful and important to offer at the community level.
Here at Brockman House, we offer a variety of learning atmospheres - from computer classes where you'll be placed in a small class but will be expected to study at home too, to craft classes where you can learn new skills in a friendly social environment. At times, when we have funding, we also offer courses such as the award winning Managing The Maze program, which at Brockman House is offered to women returning to work or study. Our program varies each school term and is designed around the communities needs.
Can you help?
If you'd like to see us offer a particular course, or can contribute yourself, we'd love to hear from you. Please phone Reception on 9279-1588 or email - admin@brockmanhouse.net.
Every term we issue a new term programme, which is available at the Centre and if you become a member you will also be posted a copy of the quarterly Members Magazine.
We would love to see you at the Centre. Pop in and say hi, and let us know what we can to do or offer to contribute to this amazing community of ours.
